the local economy. live in high-definition from wbff tv in baltimore, this is fox 45 news at 10:00. good evening. i'm jennifer gilbert. there are new concerns tonight after two men were shot outside of a busy restaurant this weekend. it happened in front of hundreds of tourists. melinda roeder is live tonight with more. >>reporter: tonight police are still searching for the shooter. the two victims, we're told, are going to be okay. it was a frightening insurance and many worry what kind of impression this makes on tourists. saturday night and the inner harbor is full of visitors. >> we're going over to hooters to get hamburgers. the shooting came as a shock to those sitting down to dinner. >> from what we know, moments before the shooting we had an individual approach officers down by the theatre and say there was a male who was armed with a gun. >>reporter: as police searched

for the suspicious man, gunfire suddenly erupted. officers scrambled to the scene. >> when they got here they found twshgs o victims suffering from gunshot wounds. >>reporter: right inside the pavilion. it's not the kind of experience tourists expected. sunday afternoon the crowds come back. >> people are still coming. >>reporter: this weekend the inner harbor is hosting a special visitor. >> the ship was built in baltimore in 1943. >> we have had upwards of 5,000 people on board this weekend. >>reporter: the crew was here when saturday night's shooting took, a rare incident, they say. >> sat here many times and never had a problem. >>reporter: since the ship depends on donations to stay afloat, they hope it won't come home to any more violence that could scare the crowds away.

>> fairly well-patrolled, but you can't control what happens. >>reporter: police are trying. they say there's no reason to feel unsafe. >> for the most part, tourists are safe. >>reporter: even those who witnessed the commotion, say it won't keep them away. >> not at all. they have police and everything they need. it's a nice place to come to. >>reporter: tonight the mayor issued a statement about the shooting. she says, "we will not tolerate the inner harbor being a hangout for those who break the law or create a nuisance of any kind. police believe the shooter knows his two victims. one was shot in the leg and the other in the arm. so far, no arrests. if you have any information, baltimore police want you to give them a call. live tonight from the inner harbor, melinda roeder, fox 45 news at 10:00. a man is shot in the face in northeast baltimore. police make an arrest. this happened around 8:30 this morning.

police say they found a 39-year old man who had been shot several times. he's in the hospital in stable condition. the suspect is facing charges of putting attempted murder and assault. police say he shot the victim over an argument. there's a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of a convict who escaped in howard county. he escaped late thursday while being transported from the courts, the howard county detention center. he got away after he choked his deputy until he was unconscious. he's wanted for attempted murder of an officer. michael phelps says he'll be back in training tomorrow in spite of his sore ankle from that car accident. on his official facebook page, he said he is fine and he is concerned for the two women that were involved in the crash. police determined the accident that happened downtown thursday night was caused by the driver

of the other car ran a red light. he was cited for having an expired, out-of-state license. now it looks like president obama is backing off his insistence on a public option to help cover almost 50 million uninsured. today the president's health secretary said a government-run health care plan may not be necessary after all. at a town hall in colorado on saturday, the most pointed question addressed the government-run public insurance option. >> how in the world can a private corporation providing insurance compete with the intity that does not have to worry about making a profit, doesn't have to may local property taxes. >>reporter: the president's response -- his position on the issue. >> whether we have it or don't have it is not the entirity of health care reform. this is just one sliver of it, one

>>reporter: the 10th annual cal ripken world series kicked off this weekend, bringing young players from all over the world from mexico to missouri. >> the plane wasn't too bad. it was only 2.5 hours. >>reporter: organizers say they're already seeing some of the largest crowds in the tournament's history. >> potentially during a tough economy families want to spend time together and they want to participate in events which are really family-affordable entertainment. >>reporter: the tournament is expected to generate some big-league money and estimated 3 to $5 million towards the local economy. from local vendors inside the stadium -- >> we have menus for our new restaurants. >>reporter: -- to the dozens of hotels and restaurants outside. >> we share the parking lot with the holiday inn. we're already seen an increase in their business, which increases

new questions tonight about the climate change bill. the washington times is working on a story about how the legislation designed to reduce global warming may be difficult and expensive to implement. >> in all likelihood, the limelight-change bill that passed the house of representatives in june, would create a massive new bureaucracy with thousands of federal employees required being paid billions of dollars that have not yet been allocated under the

legislation. >> for more on the other stories in the washington times go to foxbaltimore.com and click on the washington times icon. a day of joy and celebration turns tragic in kuwait as more than 40 people die in a fire at a wedding. flames started inside a tent. 35 women and 6 children were killed and almost 60 others are in the hospital. it was only women there because the men attend separate wedding parties. no word on what caused the fire. two russian air force fighters collide mid-air, killing one 've the pilots. it happened during a practice for an upcoming air show. all 3 pilots ejected from the jets. the commander was found dead. 5 people were also hurt when one of the jets hit a home. federal health officials need to talk about the upcoming flu season and how to distribute the h1-n1 vaccine.

the question is whether to distribute it to everybody right away or just to certain people. the vaccine should be available in october. pregnant women, infants and at-risk groups will most likely be the first to get the shot. >> i think we're doing a great job at getting ready. i think by the time we need to be ready, we will be ready. >> the university of maryland school of medicine is taking part in the trial of the vaccine. getting the most when it comes to sun veen may not be enough to look at the label. some of the claims on the bottles are misleading. there's apparently no such thing as all-day protection and products that have an spf of 80, 90 or 100 could give us a false sense of security. 50 is about the highest level of protection there is and changes to the system are in the works. >> the new fda rulings will

good evening, ladies and gentlemen. looking at a pretty warm weekend with plenty of sunshine. looks like we're going to see things heating up

as we go through the work week and we're going to continue to see chances for showers towards the middle of the week. looking outside right now, hd skycam inner harbor relatively quiet conditions. clear skies. temperatures right now sitting at 78 degrees. winds are calm and humidity levels at 71 percent. pressure at 30.71 inches. we'll continue to see that rise as high pressure moves into the area keeping us nice and clear the next couple of days. right now temperatures across the middle portions of the state, 82. baltimore look at 76 degrees. harrisburg. richmond looks like we'll continue to see the warm air back from the southwest start to wrap around the area of high pressure the next couple of days. heating is up quite a bit and it's going to stick around most of the week. looks like clear conditions across the mid-atlantic. we had a few pop-up showers and thunderstorms. looks like the front is moving through the

great lakes region. indiana getting showers and thunderstorms towards indianapolis west of south bend, indiana. that is the front that is going to give us a cooldown. it will take a couple of days to get here. we're keeping our eye to the sky over the atlantic. there's noisy activity popping up over this weekend. it's been a quiet hurricane pattern so far. now we're starting to see things heat up in the tropics. this is tropical storm bit. winds sustained at 63 miles an hour. winds are gusting up to 75 miles an hour. we'll continue to see this probably strengthen overnight tonight becoming an official first hurricane of the season. it's going to continue to track to the west moving at 20, 25 miles an hour. looking at or -- 15 to 20 miles an hour. the track right now increasing it to a category 1 strength. this is the model data. it's going to continue to make a track coming

up just missing the dominican republic. we have to watch it, especially folks in bermuda to see if this makes a right turn. we could see this make a turn. we're going to have to watch this closely to see how the storm tracks. that's something to take note of. back at home looking at relatively quiet conditions. we have a few high, thin clouds towards anne arundel county. the future scan showing things clearing up for tomorrow morning. we'll see clear skies for your morning commute. things heating up into the lower 90s. we'll see our next chance for rain popping into the forecast as we get into tuesday late afternoon. slight chance for a stray shower. better chances arrive as we get better towards late tuesday night and wednesday. looking at 91 for your high with an easterly wind at 5 to 10. plenty of sunshine

tomorrow. central portions of state -- temperatures at 93 degrees. pretty hot day with winds out of the east at 5 to 10. heading to the south real quick we talk about bill to the east. we have tropical storm claudet right now making landfall over parts of the panhandle of florida. this storm is dropping 3 to 5 inches of rain and it's making landfall in the next couple of hours and has winds from 50 to 60 miles an hour at this time. it is a tropical storm. it will lose strength as it makes its way into parts of alabama and mississippi. high pressure is continuing to push that storm to the southwest. we probably won't get any effects from that. our effects will come from the cold front and as we continue to see this high pressure it will continue to wrap around warmer temperatures into our neck of the woods as we get into the next day here. 93 degrees tomorrow. 93 on tuesday. looking at a 20 percent chance for a stray, late shower. wednesday, 91

from the event will benefit the university of maryland hospital for children. >> it touches our hearts because our son right here is an oncology patient at the university of maryland. it's awesome for them to be here and take time out just to make these kids smile and be adults too. it's fun for everybody. >> not only is he raising money for the hospital for children, he also recently joined the florida survives. his teammate put his best foot forward hosting the 5k and fun walk for his charity. he headed over to patterson park for the event. he and his wife launched the organization earlier this year. its goal is to help distressed children throughout maryland. a very impressive performance in the season opener. troy smith talks
